Subject: 1968 - 73

I joined Tonbridge (I think) as a 1st year in '68 till '73. One of the first memories was looking at the Main Entrance as a first day 11 year old and thinking how huge it was! My dad was based in Dusseldorf with 28 Reg (Movements) at the airport so I bussed in daily. I don't really remember anyone in particular except my best mate Joey Englishby, also in Dusseldorf, who was a year ahead and therefore either looked out for me or led me into further trouble - depending whose side you listen to! The covered way to the dining rooms sticks in my mind, as does crossing what seemed to be miles of muddy playing fields to get to the bus park**. Also doing HMS Pinafore, must have been '71/72, and playing the Major-General. (Just seeing your entry reminded me also of Sorceror as Alexis(?) - and drinking Malzbier in the dressing rooms afetr the shows!)

**Trying to grab a crafty cig before the 45 minute journey home.

Cross-country runs in sub-zero temperatures, and the apparent lack, ever, of hot water in the changing room showers after them - still, after the outside temperatures even cold seemed warmish and what a relief to get get rid of a half-ton of Westfalian mud from the legs!

Other than these, no particular people or teachers (that came out wrong!) stick in my mind; overall though, with the benefit of years I'd say that Kent gave me the education academically and in life that has kept me in good(ish) stead for the last nearly 40 years.

If any of my maunderings have made any sense, or you were in the same year groups, or could trigger any more happy memories, please keep in touch.

Thanks

Malcolm

Hi Malcom, don't know if you'll re-visit this thread but if HMS Pinnofore was performed at R'dhalen Theatre, then I was the drummer boy! We may have been in the same class in Tonbridge.

Hi Jurgen. I used to live in Hugo-Eckener Strasse, and I remember you and your sister Addie, I think. Did she go out with a footballer from Borrosia M-G whilst you were there? I hung around with Katie Conry and Geoff Elliot amongst others.
