Hi, I loved my time in Kent. I remember Mr Cassidy, our year head, Mr Taylor Our form tutor. I think I had a home ec teacher called Miss Puzic (or something like.)I remember names Lisa Bashford, Maxine Welford, Stuart Greenough, I was really quiet at school and quite shy. Some things do! I lived in Krefeld and remember going to the youth club and going ice skating with a big group. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me, sorry I don't have anymore names i remember faces better.

I was at Kent from when it opened in '63 until posting back to UK in Nov '65. Mr Ford was the Head, Mr Myhill the deputy, Mr J A Davies my form master. Mr Worrall taught us French and German, Mr Cork, maths. I remember the efforts we put in digging the long jump pit - probably much to the delight of Mr Lacklison! I visited Kent in 1977 when having joined the army I was serving in Germany - must have been acouple of years before it closed. Many fond memories of the old place, and after all it isn't every day you get to go to school in an old hospital. If there's anyone from my vintage out there do please get in touch.

United Kingdom was Mr Ruston who told me the dorm chaos when Mr Pope arrived was to keep us on our toes....

Strange how I can remember just about everything from my time at kent...wish I could remember what happened between then and now......

Hey Andrew Cowie - I know you came along well after me but why did the cellars terrify you? I used to love them.

But then I'm weird....was now.....

Hey Mr. then.

Yes I remeber Mr. Arnold, and the the model club in the cellars and the diorama of Verdun - which I helped with.

Or I did at least until you threw me out of the club for being a bad boy one night....I was most upset.

I also well remember the chaos of Mr. Pope's arrival at deal House....nobody knew what dorms they were in and YOU said..."it was just to keep us on our toes..."

It was Bill Mitchell at BFBS who did the Big Wood Tales, not my Dad btw - who was Terry James on the radio, like I tend to be known as Kevin James when writing or taking photographs, which is what I do now

(my Mum was a singer known as Pat James for the same reason...Knowles is a crap name for people who want to be famous.....)

Kevin P - drop me a line anytime (same for anybody else)...I tried your email addy just now but all I get is address incorrect....

I do have a pc problem atm so I'm using my local library until I get it fixed....

To Kevin Knowles:

Glad to see that you remember me Kevin. I have vivid memories of you in Deal House along with a few others such as Nick Manley, Alastair Burt etc. I don't remember if you were part of the Deal House Military Modelling Club which I used to take in a room in the Kent School cellars. We made a diorama of the WW1 Battle of Verdun which was set up in the school entrance hall. I also remember your father, Terry Knowles, I think I have his first name right, who used to broadcast on BFBS. I really enjoyed his "Big Wood Tales" when I was relaxing with a cup of coffee after school.

I retired last September after 37 years teaching although I have to say that the early 70's in Kent School seem only like 10 years ago rather than 30+. It is sad that Deal House no longer exists but that's progress for you. I expect that you will remember Warren Pope who was in charge when I arrived. At the time there was a very nice Austrian lady who was the Matron but I can't think of her name now. Warren Pope was followed by John Morell as the boss at Deal. He was still there when I finished boarding duties in 1974. Do you remember a Welsh Art Teacher who was a boarding tutor at Deal - Mick Arnold? ( A good friend of mine at the time but unfortunately we've lost touch now). What are you doing with yourself now Kevin? I always remember you as a pretty serious minded guy!!

This is amazing - I thought all traces for this school were long gone, this is so cool. One of the best schools I ever attended, I often tell my lad of stories and happenings that took place here. I was a Boarder at Deal ( that was the boys wasn't it ) for 3 years and all I can remember was the fun I had. I remember spending many a night seeking over to the girls dorms or them to us.

I am ashamed and sorry to say I cant really remember any names apart form Kevin Knowles and a mate named Dean I cant even recall any of the teachers, Dam. -- old age I guess. If anyone wants to get in touch then please do.

I am living in the UK but I have just recently brought an apartment in Dubai which is a great place and where I plan to live ----------- one day.

I do actually remember you Kevin. It's strange how the mention of a few names brings young faces clearly into view. You are right - some of us were not much older than our pupils!! I have just retired at 58 so I'm not so ancient. I don't know who the red VW guy was. Are you sure it wasn't me? I used to drive VW's in Germany - first a Beetle, then a Variant (great car!!), followed by two Passats - one of which was red. Terry Gilpin stuck to Peugot 504's, Fred Cowell and Mike Hayes drove Renault 16's. Another close friend of mine with whom I'm still in contact - Dave Evans (Science Teacher), drove a VW Variant and then got a Volvo. There was an Art Teacher, Tom Neilson Marsh, who drove one of the first BMW 3 series. Rod Ellis drove a Saab for a while. He eventually left teaching and joined the RAF. Don't know if he's still serving. I met an RAf Officer about 7 years ago down in Bavaria who knew Rod. At that time he was based at the big American airbase at Ramstein near Kaiserslautern.
Don't know about Don Davis - I think he left Kent before I did as did John Morell.
Good to hear from you Kevin - what are you doing in Texas?

Mr McNulty,
It was good to see your post on the message board. I am not sure you remember me... my elder brother, Michael Jones, was two years ahead of me, I am the younger one 'Kevin Jones' I remember Mr Martin well, and also Terry Gilpin. I keep thinking you guys must be ancient by now, but really most of the teachers were under 30 and were not that much older than us. You had a friend who drove a VW I think it was red.. can't remember his name. I often wonder what happened to everyone.. Adrian Leggett and Nigel Parsons. Phil Bishop who was so good at science? I am pleased you returned to Northern Ireland, and that you ended up in a good position. I do not remember your wife. I am guessing Mr Morel is long gone. Mr Davis (Don, I think) was a good man, and I think of hime often. I hope the nostalgia of returning to here is not too painful for you... I feel so old when I find so few postings pre 1970.
Stay in touch please Mr McNulty

Great to find this site! I taught in the History Department with Tony Martin, Chris Dodsworth, Nora Harkness etc. Tutor in Deal House for three years. Was also 2i/c Careers under John Loaring. My wife, Naomi was School Librarian between 1974 and 1976. Prior to that she was a Lab Assistant in the Science Block. A few names which I recognise among the former pupils who have contributed to this Guestbook, (great to hear from you Kevin Knowles!!) Had a look at the photographs taken of the old school at the 2006 reunion. Really saddened to see the state the venerable old building is now in. Many, many happy memories. Kent School and its pupils taught me alot about the art of teaching - more than any college would ever do. Still in touch with Linda & Paul Butterworth, Father Bill, Fred Cowell,Terry Gilpin, Mike Hayes - does anybody remember them? Margaret Corden who worked in the General Office and her husband Malcolm (ex RAF Germany Band, coming to visit us next month - much reminiscing!! I have recently retired as Principal of a High School in Newtownards, County Down. Had a Maths Supply Teacher for a while, former Kent School Maths Teacher, Jean Johnston who had married a Church of Ireland Vicar. What a really small world it is. I will keep visiting this site from now on - aah nostalgia!!

Hello there, thought I might be able to add a couple of names to the list of people who lived through the Kent Experience and whos whereabouts are known; I spent 2 years working with Martin Lacklison in Malta recently, and visited Maki Takashima in Tokyo. If you're passing Japan one day- drop in -it's close to Nirvana imo. Mr Mordecai and Danny and Lynda Strike were kind enough to put me up for a night or so as I passed by as I drove round europe for something to do last year. I visited Kent and bluffed my way in- (told the dopey 'guard' I was interested in buying the site) I have about 100 photos, will post some. Pretty depressing pics mind you- bullet hole in the front entrance doors, all trashed inside. The chapel is interesting... Good to see many familiar names on this site - trying to put a face to the name is another matter... 40 yrs old next week! seeesh...

Hello all ex Kenties this is a great site brings back many great memories. My dad was stationed at Bruggen so I went to Cheshire Middle School and then to Kent in the third year. I was in 3PJM Mr Martins tutor group, he was a bit of a dude and all the birds fancied him. In my class I remember Russel Flint, Ceri Whitley, Louise Allen, Siobhan, Julia Jones (I play snooker with her dad and uncle most Saturdays). I seen her last year and she still looks great. She was on the same P&A course as me aswell in the late 80's when we were in the RAF - small world. I will have to get myself to one of these reunions, I think my liver should just about be able to cope with it. Keep up the outstanding work all those who organise this great site.
